[Review] Wallace and Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death

Wallace and Gromit had always been my favourite british show, it is very british (Chess on Biscuit, a cup of tea...), cute, humorous and easy to understand. A claymation for the children and adult.
Wallace is an inventor which invented many goldberg machines for simple daily tasks like waking up, toasting, etc. And Gromit is the highly intelligent beagle dog living with him who always solves the problem and saves the day.
So far, the producer, Nick Parker had done three episodes which last 30 minutes, a film and a short series since 1983. I haven't seen the short series, but saw the rest (A Grand Day Out, Close Shave, Wrong Trouser, Wererabbit), even the spin off Shaun the Sheep.
The story is very easy to understand, it also had shown indirect reference to many films, with a good sense of humour, every scene and action had been carefully put together by the director, and there is always something for everyone no matters the age group. Overall, it is a lovely series...so far.
Having just seen the Wallace and Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death on iPlayer, my impression had changed a bit.
This episode started the partner as bakers, and with the recent news of a series baker killer on the loose. It quickly introduce an old pin up girl that seems to have a crash with wallace...
To sum up my feeling, the latest episode is for a more mature group rather than for all ages, it had clearly aim to be challenging by introducing serial killer, murders and death of the character and mild sexual reference. This episode also introduced a love interest for Gromit, which is rather nice to see, but doubt she will appear in the next episode?
I didn't enjoyed this episode as much as the previous ones, felt it had lost the feeling of innocence, as wallace commented after he saw the news of the baker killer. "At least that means more business for us"

[Criticism] Katy Grannan's Westerner
Went to see the Katy Grannan's Westerner at The Photographer's Gallery today, and I was not disappointed. This is my first criticism, so please bear the bad english and lack of communication skill.
Katy Grannan's Westerner, at Photographer's Gallery till Feb/2009
http://www.photonet.org.uk/index.php?pxid=948
The leaflet quote: A lifetime spent in the northeast makes me suspicious of so much sun, but out west, there is no hiding from it. -Katy Grannan
It continues to say: the exhibition features colour portraits of individuals living on the west coast of America who endeavour to define themselves under the scrutiny of a rentless pacific sun.
The exhibitions features around 20 colour portraits, which can be divided into two groups, one group feature two very close transexual friends, Gale and Dale, and the other group feature a young girl, Nicole.
As her quote suggested, it is about how people exposed themselves, under the sun or under camera.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Firstly, I am gonna talk about Dale and Gail, most of the photos she took feature them as female, the dress, the make up, the poses, all represent them as female. This can be quite striking, at the same time of seeing them posing as female, you can not help yourself to think of them as male, but the strong ferminity they represent shatter your thought. In the leaflet, it also said: For many, the american west hold a mystical status as a destination for rugged individualists, those willing to risk everything in a quest for opportunity and reinvention. I can not help myself but to imagine the background story of Gale and Dale, maybe they are local or maybe they come to this place after they abandoned their malehood, to reinvent themself.
Watching them dress and pose, maybe you think, this is wrong and sick, but maybe this is the little happiness they can have, and would you take their right to be happy away? For them, posing as a female is posing within posing, even with their physical male part removed, their psychological male part (memories, experiences as male) can not be removed completely...
I am gonna talk about the two portraits which strike me most with Dale and Gale, the first one is the gale holding a baby. The contrast between the two subject matter is so strong, old and young, limited and limitless of possibilities, could not and could have babies in the future, if the baby is a girl, then the contrast is even stronger as the baby represent something gale can never become, a girl.
The other striking portrait is the big one in the middle of the galery wall, feature both of them sit aside, head bend down, I think the message o the portrait can be described as: No matter how bad things are, at least we still have each other...
---------------------------------
About Nicole:
She is a complete different creature from dale and gale, I remember hearing the interview with Katy Grannan that Nicole is very hard to control, which is a intresting challenge to her as the photographer, the introduction on the wall also said Nicole is psychologically very complex, and this can be observed from every portraits she did, you see a different Nicole, except for one with the baby which I will talk about later.
She was doing a nude on the beach, but by thinking of a nude on beach, my mind had shown me great blue sea and sky, a youthful body, clean and simple, but what you get is a body twisted in an strange pose, with her hair almost cover her eyes, and patches of sand all over her leg, which break your expectation completly, its like, after she hear and understand the instruction from the photographer, she act to oppose her idea, to break the rules, so in the end you get very strange portraits, she doesn't want to follow the rules, the reason of that maybe unconciously self-protection, she protect her innerself by acting out this crazy character.
However, I had also noticed something, one of the portraits features she with a swallowed abedomen, which I guess is the sign of pregency, in that portraits, she is shown to be worn out, tired, trashed, a bit depressive, acompannied by a candle with christian art(?), and this is shot in 2006. Her last portraits, shot in 2007, feature her holding a baby named "Star",
it does not stated whether it is her baby, but her expression had changed from the role of rebelious girl to a mother, I think this portrait is the most unpretended of her.
Another interesting thing I noticed is both dale/gale and Nicole series features a female figure holding a baby, gale holding a baby represent two people doing different thing in the same frame (Gail is touching the baby, but the baby looks straight into the camera.) But Nicole holding the baby show a very classic family portrait.
I think the photographer, Katy Grannan photograph the series with no intention to explain her subject to the audiences, but rather let the audience interpret themselves.
It is something new, show me new ways of photography can be done and shown, let me think alot, so I enjoyed it.
Thanks for reading (if you actually read till here...)
